Volume I Legion · Dawn of the Hawk

Act I — Transmutation

Before the hawk had a name, it had a body, and the body was heavy. Transmutation begins not as a lightning change but as a slow agreement between what a soul was and what it is willing to become. This is the first act: not the flight, but the forging that makes flight possible.

FIG. I — ACT I, PART I The forging, before the form.

Every element resists the fire before it yields to it. So it was with the one who would become Fâllconi — pressed, melted, and made strange to itself before any wing unfolded. What follows is not spectacle. It is the quiet, difficult arithmetic of change.

FIG. II — ACT I, PART II What the fire leaves behind.

Two plates survive from this passage of the work: the fall that precedes the rising, and the peril that virtue stands unmoved against. Read them in either order — the transmutation does not care which door you enter by.

FIG. III — THE FALL OF CROWNS What is laid down before the ascent can begin.
FIG. IV — THE SCORNED PERIL An old emblem of virtue unmoved by danger.

The soul that descends into the mud does not stay the shape it arrived in. It is worked, the way ore is worked, until what remains can bear weight it could not have borne before. This is Transmutation: the first act, and the quietest.

The furnace does not ask permission.

What burns first is the part that was never truly yours.

“To descend into the mud is not to fall — it is to remember what the wings were for.”
